CES Leeds Student Wins Local Parkrun in Leeds
A Student Story from CES Leeds
Student life at CES Leeds goes far beyond the classroom. This student's story shows how international students can build friendships, gain confidence, and become part of the local community while studying English in the UK.
For many learners, adjusting to a new country can feel challenging at first. However, Leeds offers a welcoming and energetic environment where students can quickly feel at home. From cultural experiences to sports and social events, student life in Leeds provides countless opportunities to connect with others and practise English in real-life situations.
One recent example of this is CES Leeds student Raphael Stotzer from Switzerland, whose experience highlights how everyday activities can lead to memorable achievements.
A Standout Moment in Leeds
CES Leeds English language student, Raphael Stotzer, from Switzerland, was the first finisher at Woodhouse Moor Park Run on Saturday, 28 February.
Woodhouse Moor Parkrun is one of the oldest and largest Park Runs in the world, with 783 runners taking part that bright early spring morning. Along with the top 20 finishers were Fred Mer, ex-Yellow Shirt at the school, athletic club pals Dominic and Ade, and Rob Tuck, Leeds principal, who came home further down the field but still finished first in his age group.
“I joined a running club when I arrived, and running is a way to bring people together” said Raphael.
Rob agrees, “Sport is a great leveller. Running is almost universal. Joining a running club for example is a great way to make friends, integrate with local culture and improve your English”.
Perhaps Raphael should start a local park run in his hometown when he returns, but until then, we must decide which park run to do next week.

How Sport Helps International Students Connect
Raphael’s experience reflects a key part of student life in Leeds—the ability to connect through shared interests. Joining running clubs in Leeds or participating in events like parkrun gives students a natural way to meet people outside of class.
For international learners, these types of activities for international students are more than just hobbies. They create real opportunities to practise English in everyday situations, build friendships, and feel part of a local student community.
Whether it’s running, football, or group outings, taking part in local activities helps students develop confidence and settle into life in a new country more quickly.
